Ghost Story Contest



Since 1989, the Helen Creighton Folklore Society co-sponsors an annual ghost-story writing contest with Halifax Public Libraries (the Alderney Gate Branch hosts an awards ceremony online). In 2022, Nimbus Publishing became a co-sponsor offering book prizes.

Contestants from age 7 to 15 are invited to submit either an original ghost story or a retelling of a story in their own words that they have heard. The contest runs from June to August 31st of every year. Check with Halifax Public Libraries for more information.

Helen Creighton’s book, Bluenose Ghosts, has some excellent stories to inspire a retelling.

GHOST STORY WRITING CONTEST AND THE HALIFAX PUBLIC LIBRARY WORKERS STRIKE

Many young writers have been wondering about their entries for the contest since the libraries have been closed because of the workers strike. Here is a reply from the Administrative staff of the Alderney Gate Library:

As far as we are aware, the contest will not be cancelled. If you know of someone who would still like to submit an entry, they have two ways of doing so:

As long as it is postmarked or sent by email by the contest deadline of Monday, September 9, staff will review all entries received when the branches reopen.
